Bryony Carr [England]
In
1996 I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour (Medulloblastoma) just
3 weeks before my 18th birthday. I had brain surgery to remove the tumour
and afterwards underwent 7 weeks of intensive radiotherapy.
After
starting a BSc in Biomedical Sciences degree at the University of the West
of England, my cancer recurred in my first year of study in 1998.
My treatment involved low and high dose chemotherapy and an
autologous bone marrow transplant. This was successful and I was able to
continue my studies at university.
I am now 24 years old and in my final year of my degree and hope to
graduate in November 2003!
In 2001 I went on a sailing ship called "Tenacious". This ship was especially designed to make it possible for disabled people to sail together with able-bodied people (lifts, large isles for wheelchair users, handrails). On this 10 day voyage, sailing over the English Channel and around the north coast of France, I met my future husband Dave. We have recently moved into a flat together in Bristol and look forward to the future, whatever it may bring!
