A word from the editors

We have been able to compile another newsletter with three interesting articles on long term consequences of childhood cancer, both physical and psychosocial, and .............. These are partly based upon lectures from the Nurses Meeting at the SIOP Conference in Montevideo in October 1995.

The General Assembly Meeting of the ICCCPO in Århus, Denmark, in May this year and the parents meeting at the SIOP Conference in Vienna, Austria, in October deserve your special attention. Very interesting for parents in South and Middle America is the Conference of the SLAOP, the Latin American Society for Pediatric Oncology, in November this year. This meeting will also include a parents meeting, a fantastic continuation of the meeting in Montevideo. See for dates and details the Announcements.

As you know we need your help in spreading this newsletter and in drawing the attention of childhood cancer (parent) organizations to the ICCCPO. It is also important that you keep us informed about any change of address and about newly established parents groups.

The next edition of the newsletter (Vol. 3, nr. 2) will be published in Summer. We are looking forward for your contributions and ideas but also for information on your needs and problems. Although we are not able to give you material support, we may be able to improve the care for children with cancer in your country by sharing experiences and by endorsing and supporting the establishment of "twinning programs".
The deadline for the next number is July 1 1996. Please send your contributions to either of the two editors before that date.

We are looking forward to meeting many of you at the General Assembly and the Nordic Conference in Århus, Denmark.

ICCCPO News

Membership

We invite all organizations to join the ICCCPO! If you are interested you can contact the Secretariat in Sweden and ask for information and/or an application form. The annual membership fee is $500 for a Nation. In case there are more groups in a country, they can split this amount. However, if your organisation wants to join but does not have the financial means, please notify this in the application. As an appeal to solidarity, nations willing to pay more thus help others who cannot afford this amount to join the international confederation.

Newsletter in translation

Spanish and Italian versions of former ICCCPO Newsletters are available at the Secretariat in Sweden. We are looking forward to receiving any translations into other languages! This might be a great help for others.

Chemo-Kasper takes the world

The little book for children explaining chemotherapy has been translated from the original Danish language into Dutch, English, German, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish. Lettish, Russian and Lithuanian versions may soon be published, thanks to the German organization, the Deutsche Leukämie-Forschungshilfe. The original is available from the Danish organization, the translations from the various national organizations. The book can be accompanied by a nice little doll.

An Alphabet about Kids with Cancer

Rita Berglund
The Children's Legacy, Denver
ISBN 0 9629365 3 7
   A is for Aches.
   B is for Bodies.
   C is for Cancer.
The table of content of this remarkable book reads like a "What's what" of childhood cancer. And it should. The author, Rita Berglund, knows all the ins and outs of childhood cancer, because she has been there. She is a mother of a boy with cancer. This book is her way of offering help to anyone connected to the world of childhood illness.
An Alphabet about Kids with Cancer is a powerful and tender book. It helps you see that cancer is an experience that need to be shared. The book is a unique means of establishing open and meaningful communication, an excellent bridge into the silent thoughts of children.
The book is very well designed; beautiful monochrome pictures by Katy Tartakoff accompany the text.
